Below is the first page of a 7-page 1875 Iowa State Census that no one seemed to know existed until I stumbled upon the Carroll County version at the Carroll Courthouse a few years ago. That's my gr-grandfather, Cyrus Rhoads, highlighted in red (?)...Come to find out, there were a whopping 185 different questions asked in this 13th State Census of Iowa -- and we thought we had it bad in 2010 -- NOT!
I can't help but think there are more of these genealogical masterpieces to be found at other courthouses around Iowa. Most of them are probably collecting dust in a courthouse basement or two. Needless to say, I'm definitely keeping my eyes -- and ears -- open at every courthouse I visit!
Meanwhile, help yourself to the Excel-based genealogy tools below -- designed specifically for genealogists. Kudos to GARY MINDER of Poulsbo, Washington, who created them for us!
